Years ago I probably would have described beauty as something requiring us to cover things up, masking imperfections, having a good lip color, and painting on and lacquering until only the good stuff remained. 💠
But my definition of beauty has greatly changed. I've learned in more recent years that beauty is us being human. Being messy, being imperfect, being open and being vulnerable. I've also learned that in order to succeed in any type of creative endeavor, the Universe demands that you pay a toll. The price is that you have to show up as who you really are. That’s why dreams come a size too big so we can grow into them.
You have to lay it out there — the good, the bad and ESPECIALLY the ugly, the awkward and the uncomfortable. 💠
If you don't make yourself vulnerable in this way, then humans aren't too interested, and worse, you lose opportunity to connect. Sure, we love some celebrity scandals here and there and we may unconsciously strive to look like someone on TV or Instagram. But the truth is, as humans, we are drawn to the quirky, the imperfect, the raw and the untouched. We are all unique, so that's what we respond most to in others - their unique qualities. Not the veil of perfection. We all want connection. We can't connect with fake. 💠
Yes, it's hard to open up and make yourself vulnerable by showing the world who you really are. To say, “Yes, this is who I am, I'm a little fucked up, and this is what I can give you.” Yet, doing so is the only way to make a real impact. 💠
This goes for just showing up for one person in their struggle. Or letting someone finally love you. My advice for the day? Lean into those uncomfortable feelings. Give into those layers that make you unsure of yourself. Show others who you really are. Because reality is, if we all could one day decide to wake up and be vulnerable about who we are and what we fear - we wouldn't be hiding anymore. We’d all be less angry. Less hateful, less separated. We’d have more compassion, connection and love.
Wouldn't that be magic? Wouldn’t that be liberating?
A girl can dream 😉
