Deaf Children are not hearing Children who cannot hear. Our children learn through a visual stimulus. Therefore our children need to learn through Sign Language. Many myths are spread regarding Sign Language, the vast majority of which are false. Sign Language can provide further support to our children who use technology. Sign Language is the first and primary language of many Deaf Children. We need access to the Full Curriculum through Sign Langauge. We need real and full fluency in Sign Language from our Teaching and Educational Staff. We need Curriculums in Sign Language in Primary School, plus in the Junior and Leaving Certificate.
As we begin to slide into the weekend I seem to always get a little reflective...When it comes to talking I'll be the first to raise my hand. Thus the thoughts I am about to share with you. The other day I observed two people communicating through sign language. One of the things that jumped out at me is neither of them were glancing down at their phones, neither were looking around or fidgeting during the conversation. They were intently and intentionally focused on each other. The reality is that if they didn't stay focused on each other there would be no communication, there would be no conversation. In their silence I could sense a depth and connection far more powerful and meaningful then any of the other verbally expressed conversations I witness that day. Sometimes it takes more than just keeping your mouth shut!
