Let’s learn!💉Recently I recovered a trauma patient from surgery who had used cocaine overnight. In recovery it was strongly emphasized not to use any beta blockers (ie: metoprolol) to bring down his blood pressure or heart rate. Why? .
Simply put, Alpha and Beta receptors work in opposition to regulate our autonomic nervous system. Cocaine is a stimulant. It causes an increase in the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) (alpha receptors), which increases heart rate and blood pressure and increases the amount of oxygen the heart needs to function. If a medication that blocks beta receptors (Beta Blocker) is introduced with cocaine on board, the alpha receptors become unopposed and the SNS response is greatly exaggerated. The heart can’t keep up with that amount of overstimulation and patient will likely have a heart attack. Whoa! #nowyouknow
