Realistically I would say that it is hard. But psychologically (and more truthfully), it's however simple or however hard you want it to be.
I think It really comes down to what you consider "living". You can treat life like the life of any other animal, where all you really do is eat, sleep, and breathe. In terms of that, we have things pretty well off.
But people have discovered many times that a true, interesting, and fulfilling human life comes from leaving your comfort zone and challenging yourself. Perhaps one could say that your life isn't complete if it wasn't hard at one point.
You can also complicate your life and make it hard. This I feel is much worse, as in no way are you "challenging yourself" healthily by making things more complicated than they should be. Your perspective on life is very important and almost entirely depending on how hard or simple you feel life is, regardless of the actuality.
And there are things in life that we can't stop or control; horrible accidents, terminal illnesses, ect. In fact, we hardly have full control over anything in life. But while we can't control these events, we can control how we react and feel to these events, and that is key when life becomes too hard (and it will). For me, I value happiness much more than having and easy or hard life, or trying to achieve something 'meaningful'. I've often found that doing what makes you happy and just being yourself is the best way to reach this meaning, and life may become hard and challenging, but you're enjoying it so much that you don't even notice.
Life is and should be hard, but if you're good at it, you like it that way.
