A safe and healthy environment for your baby begins inside the womb and stems from the food you eat to the supplements you take. While it’s common knowledge to ditch the raw sushi rolls or your favorite skinny margarita, it’s important to pay attention to what you’re applying ON your body, too.
Believe it or not, our skin is the largest organ in our body. The products we use can absorb into our bloodstream, and if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, the ingredients go to your baby.
A number of studies from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) have shown that common chemicals in everyday personal care products, such as shampoo, makeup, and moisturizers, are associated with developmental, reproductive and behavioral disorders, hormone disruption, and cancer.
Don’t worry, this information isn’t to scare or overwhelm you. Rather, it’s the perfect chance to detoxify your beauty stash by checking the labels. That’s one of the first things I do when working with women, before and during pregnancy. I look for the following “no-no” ingredients and give their vanity a revamp:
Retinyl palmitate and Retinol
Bisphenol A (BPA)
BHA and BHT
Oxybenzone Ethanolamines (MEA/DEA/TEA)
Hydroquinone or glutathione
TIP: Another option is to download an app called, Think Dirty. It’s the easiest way to learn about the potentially toxic ingredients in your cosmetics and personal care products. Just scan the product barcode and Think Dirty will give you easy-to-understand info on the product and its ingredients.
If your favorite beauty product includes an unsafe ingredient, I have good news. Luckily, the switch to a clean routine is easier than ever! After learning all of this I made the switch to clean beauty myself. Over the next month, I’ll be sharing my favorite clean beauty products (makeup, skincare, and haircare) from brands you can trust. Today on my blog www.LoriBregman.com I’m sharing my favorite natural make up products and brands.
