From the project "Dawn of Recovery - Portraits of War" for @doctorswithoutborders . Aisha, or Ayyoush, little Aisha, as the nurses call her, always wears beautiful and colorful dresses, with a rose straw hat on her head. She loves collecting roses and balloons during the children trips of the hospital: to the Children Museum or at some playgrounds. Together with Noor, one of the occupational therapy’s nurses at the MSF hospital, she practices with her left amputated hand to button up and unbutton t-shirt and skirts, to cut papers with her drawings with the scissors, to draw a circle or a line and to cut it following the lines. Aisha was only six months when the fire of a candle burns the left side of her face and arm in her city Ib, Yemen. After four operations in Yemen, the doctor in Sana’a told her father about MSF where she is now undergoing frequent surgeries over a long period of time. Between the surgeries, she has three-six months resting time, where together with her father go back to Yemen: “Ayyoush continuously improves, slowly but she is always doing better”. Over the past 10 years, we have helped rebuild lives in the Middle East by providing specialised reconstructive surgery, physiotherapy and mental health counselling at our hospital in Amman, Jordan. MSF’s reconstructive surgery programme was set up in 2006 in response to the high numbers of severe casualties from the Iraq War. As further conflicts erupted in the region, we opened our doors to wounded from Syria, Yemen and Palestine. Specializing in orthopaedic, maxillofacial and plastic surgery for the war-wounded, the programme has treated over 4,500 patients and performed over 11,000 life changing surgeries since its inception.

Most people hate early new year; I love it. It signifies a year's turning and a horizon filled with opportunity, so I've always loved the feel of a new year wedding. A wide open space filled with potential is an exciting place to be. Last year's rules have disappeared with the years end and everything is up for grabs. It's freedom. You can make it whatever you want to be and with your big love by your side the adventure begins 🖤
