“The story of Medusa is that when Perseus cut the head of the Medusa, the gorgon, the blood fell and formed the coral. I’ve always loved this story, ever since I was a kid. It’s a great thing that you can behead somebody and through death it becomes a weapon.” Damien Hirst

The Medusa head took two and a half years to carve out of malachite. The carvers told me it was impossible, but in the end they even managed to carve the tongues. Malachite dust is poisonous so it had to be carved wearing masks and respirators.
The medusa story is so interesting - that combination of beauty and horror and death, and how she’s presented has changed so much at different points in history.
