Looking to Art Dubai For Inspiration
Art Dubai 2018 will bring 105 international galleries from 48 countries to the Madinat Jumeirah resort from 21 to 24 March 2018. Now in its 12th edition, this fair highlights Middle Eastern, North African, and South Asian (MENASA) art, and distinguishes itself with fresh ideas, to which other fair organizers could look for inspiration.
Art Dubai 2018 will include three sections: Contemporary, Modern, and Residents. Contemporary will feature 78 commercial galleries, with special effort made to co-mingle emerging, mid-level, and established dealers. Modern will feature 16 galleries focused entirely on influential 20th Century MENASA artists. Meanwhile, Residents, which is new this year, will feature solo exhibitions highlighting works made by 11 international artists who completed four to eight-week residencies in Dubai leading up to the fair. This work was made during and inspired by, their time in the UAE.
Residents are just one of the extraordinary concepts this fair has innovated – inviting global artists to interpret the distinctive culture specific to its locale. It joins the Portrait film series, which introduces viewers to lesser-known artists associated with the fair, and the Campus Art Dubai program, which offers five-month opportunities for UAE-based writers, artists, and curators to collaborate with internationally renowned mentors in their fields, in declaring that Art Dubai is focused as much on creativity as commercialism.
International art fairs have proliferated wildly in recent years. The most innovative and dynamic artists, galleries and consumers cannot possibly participate in every fair. The question all fair organizers must start asking is what they can do to make their event vital to the future. Art Dubai planners appear to be actively engaged with this question and putting forth solutions that make visiting this fair a compelling proposition. Looking to their programming as a model, it is exciting to wonder what strategies other fair organizers might develop to help themselves compete.
