Although this can be applied to #humanity in general, I specifically want to use this to point out the beauty and power of what the #blackcommunity does look like in various, unspoken ways and how #Blackunity should be across the board. We really do need to look out for each other and truly #ittakesavillage. Consider this as an example of also #blackmen protecting their women and #blackwomen showing true #sisterhood, all in one.
On the block my grandparents lived on in Brooklyn, my grandfather faithfully watched the block, as did others from different vantage points, and they all really did look out for each other and were there for each other, even while some parents were at work, especially when school was out in the Summer. Like when my bike was stolen by this man I couldn't confront as a 12-year-old but between the Black and Afro-Latino men on my block who knew the larger neighborhood, they had it back to me that evening and told me to be careful but I also knew they were watching our backs even when we weren't.
The women also knew they were safe because as dangerous as Brooklyn could be in the 80s and 90s, those men and women were old school and didn't play that! They weren't disengaged as this [gentrified/anti-social media] generation has basically become, and in light of all that has happened over the last 4 years in America and the world, unity is needed if we even hope to survive, to resist, to retaliate in self-defense if absolutely need be...to eventually overcome so that coming generations don't have to inherit oppression.
I know this is something that crosses #colorlines as I've seen examples of different cultures, races, etc look out for one another, and more of this is needed, but it can't be expected every time, but within our own community, it must become again the norm, not the exception. It's inherently #African...it's how the enslaved of our ancestors survived so that we would later exist. You ARE your #brotherskeeper and #sisterskeeper. Especially in a sick world of kidnapping/trafficking, our children need to have allies who will protect them when their immediate family is not enough.
Just do what you can, we're all we've got.
